In 2022, I came to New Orleans on vacation, cancelled my return flight, and never left. In my first week of living here, I wandered into the Mid City Library and saw the newest copy of “OUT Magazine” sitting on a table. I was so excited to gaze upon artful pictures of buff girls in tank tops and read about the hottest queer gossip. Much to my dismay, it was boring, unstylish, and depressingly superficial. How could they do us dirty like this? Ever since that disappointing moment, I’ve dreamed of doing better.
This publication is called Flinta Magazine. It’s a German acronym I picked up while trying (and failing) to get into the gay clubs in Berlin last summer. FLINTA stands for:
Femme, Lesbian, Intersex, Nonbinary, Transgender, & Agender
These groups specifically describe my queer sisters, gay friends, and fruity community members. There are so many of us, and yet we are consistently left out, left behind, and hugely under-represented in accessible media. This magazine is for you, reader. You, who are not an after-thought in my life, but the main event and the center of my universe. I hope you enjoy Flinta Magazine.
